Hike #9: Sandstone Falls Island Loop and Boardwalk (New River Gorge)

Okay guys, we are back at our newest National Park for two more hikes! Hikes #9 and #10 took me ~3 hours away to another, lesser known trail network in the Sandstone-Brooks area of New River Gorge National Park, super close to the town of Hinton, WV.  I really wanted to broaden my trail knowledge of the park, and figured that you guys would love that as well!

It was my first time on both of these trails, and I am so happy that I took the time to explore this part of the park because it is a GEM. I am also really excited to see how this area develops over the next few years with the implementation of new National Park practices, funding, etc.

Both of these trails are short and sweet, while still managing to capture features that are so beautiful and unique to our region.

Hike #9 Details:

1.   New River Gorge National Park

2.   Sandstone Falls Island Loop and Boardwalk

3.   37.76020951798153, -80.90429953400749

4.   1.4 miles

5.   30 minutes

Hike #9 is easy-peasy lemon squeezy. The perfect trail to check out if you don’t want anything strenuous, but you just want to get outside for the day. About ⅓ of the trek is along a boardwalk, and the rest is on almost entirely flat ground, taking you in a loop around the Sandstone Falls area. This trail lets you walk next to the water practically the entire time, with some really nice places to hangout for lunch or just to soak in the power of the river.

I also want to point out that the boardwalk portion of this trek is wheelchair accessible, and provides some stunning views of the Sandstone Falls.

Trailhead directions can be found on All Trails or using the coordinates above!
