Little Creek Park

On a warm spring day in South Charleston, Clark, Ray and I explored Little Creek Park. Located right off Spring Hill Avenue there is something for everyone there and you can easily make a day out of a visit.

Little Creek Parks has picnic shelters, playgrounds, hiking trails, baseball, soccer and football fields, basketball and tennis courts, a soapbox derby racing facility and an 18-hole disc golf course.

Get all the details and book your event at the website parks.cityofsouthcharleston.com.

There are lots of shelters with grills, restrooms and electricity. Add to that plenty of playground equipment and you have the makings of an unforgettable picnic. Little Creek Park boasts over a dozen sports fields and courts including the Frank A. Mullens, Jr. Athletic Complex, called “The Rock,” with two baseball and a football field. There are other turfed fields, batting cages, soccer fields, basketball courts and tennis courts.

One thing Little Creek Park has that I’ve never seen anywhere else is soap box derby racetrack. The track is over 50 years old and definitely worth a visit.

Along with all of the other sporting facilities the park has a full 18-hole disc golf course. If you’ve never tried disc golf, it’s a lot of fun. It’s just like regular golf but instead of hitting a ball into a hole you throw a disc into a basket.

There are all kinds of trails and trail access points with the best being at the bottom of the hill just past the soap box derby track. You can find a trail map at the head of the trail or on the website. The trails go all over the park and even through the creek, making it perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring nature. Make sure you visit The Devil’s Tea Table, a huge rock formation behind the baseball field at the back of the park. Wander around the trails long enough, and you’ll even find the remnants of an old sawmill and a cave, though I have to admit, I was unable to find the sawmill.

Little Creek Park has plenty to keep you and the little ones occupied all day long with outdoor adventure. If you’re near South Charleston, be sure to drop in for a visit.
