Pipestem Resort State Park: The ultimate vacation destination
Growing up in Mercer County, I was an easy ten-minute drive away from Pipestem Resort State Park, a place that holds so many memories for me. From spending weekends camping with my family to riding my first horse and falling in love with hiking, Pipestem still remains a place of joy and is a true embodiment of “Wild and Wonderful West Virginia.”
Whenever someone asks for recommendations on what to do when in southern West Virginia, Pipestem is always at the top of that list.
Nestled on the rim of the Bluestone River, Pipestem Resort State Park is a place where everyone can feel welcome and find an activity to immerse themselves in. With a full hookup campground, two lodges, and over two dozen rental cabins there are accommodations that work for any type of vacation getaway.
The most unique of these options is the Mountain Creek Lodge, which is located on the bank of the Bluestone River and only accessible by the park’s aerial tramway. Even if you’re not going to spend the night at this secluded lodge, the tramway is open to the public and the views are worth it!
If you’re still craving more aerial views after riding, look no further! Pipestem has recently installed a treetop zipline tour, which takes you on a journey through the old-growth forest and crosses the Bluestone Gorge three times!
Not really a fan of heights? That’s okay because Pipestem has an activity for everyone to enjoy! With two golf courses, tennis courts, bike trails and ample fishing, Pipestem is a place for any avid sportsman!
If you’re craving something more exhilarating, the park offers guided rock climbing, horseback riding, and whitewater rafting. You can even spend a day at Adventure Lake, climbing the inflatable mountains and bouncing off trampolines into the freshwater! For those seeking something more leisurely, Pipestem is home to several hiking trails in addition to museums and historical sites.
After a full day of fun in the park, you’re bound to get hungry, but luckily you won’t have to go too far for superb dining options. For those day-trippers on a budget, there are pavilions with picnic tables located near playgrounds that are perfect for a packed lunch.
If you’re craving something sweet, Tramway Sweets & Treat is an ice cream parlor straight out of the 50s. For those looking for a more formal dining option, The Bluestone Dining Room and Mountain Creek Dining Room both offer decadent options and a view unmatched.
After all is said and done, you won’t forget your trip to Pipestem Resort State Park. With no entry fee, this park is accessible for all to enjoy! So pack your picnic basket, lace up your sneakers, and head out to take advantage of all this special place has to offer!
