What does Black History mean to you?
Black History Month means something different to everyone. For some, it's a month of recognition for the leaders who fought to lay the groundwork leading to the civil rights movement.
For others, it's a celebration of how far our society has come, but also a reminder for how far our society has to go. In the words of Barack Obama, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”
Progress has been made in our country's history, but there's still a long way to go before the finish line.
In an attempt to help recognize, celebrate, remind and inspire, we want to share as many voices and stories as possible this month. We would love for you to tell us your favorite thing(s) about Black History, and why it’s important to you.
In particular, we'd love for you to video yourself and share it with us. We'll repost them, and share them again in a big post at the end of the month.
Here's what Dymond Carey had to say about Black History Month and what it means to her. In 2015, she became the first Black homecoming queen at Capital High School in Charleston.
