The Magic of Good ol’ West Virginia Storytelling
When it comes to storytelling, few do it better than native West Virginians.
In 2023, we had the privilege of hosting dozens of incredible guests on our podcast who've harnessed their innate Appalachian communication skills to reach a wider audience.
Two examples that particularly stood out to me during our third year of weekly conversations were John Kruk and Curtis Fleming.
In Episode 126, John Kruk, a former MLB player, sports network anchor, and current commentator for the Philadelphia Phillies, shared that he simply does not overthink it when speaking to the hundreds of thousands tuning in.
In a world where we are bombarded with perfectly-optimized advertisements and algorithm-driven Netflix suggestions, there’s something comforting and magnetic about someone sharing honest thoughts, without a hidden agenda. Sure, they may experience a gaffe or two, but don't we all? We need more folks in media like this, in my humble opinion.

Another stellar example of leveraging West Virginia storytelling prowess is Curtis Fleming. On Episode 117, he recounted his journey on 20 seasons hosting "Fly Rod Chronicles with Curtis Fleming." While the series showcases fishing adventures worldwide, it's fundamentally about people, communities, cultures, and their stories.
Curtis is an exceptional fisherman, but he'll be the first to tell you that it's the stories that keep viewers hooked. His natural charm and friendly demeanor engage his audience, while occasionally teasing his guests in good humor! (He shared an all-time Bob Huggins story on our episode, go listen!).

But doesn't that remind you of your own fishing buddy? Down-to-earth guys having fun while enjoying their favorite pastime? Of course it does, as we all cherish those moments more than anything. So it's no wonder his show has captivated millions of folks.
Getting to know Curtis through his show and then on our podcast made it an easy decision for him to join us at the 2024 Almost Heaven Classic. He’ll be on stage with hosts CJ Harvey and Cooper Simmerman for an engaging panel discussion at Adventures on the Gorge on Friday, June 7th. The AHC is our flagship live event and gathers 200+ West Virginians to learn, connect and grow while we celebrate what it means to be from the Mountain State.
The takeaway for all of us, especially if you're fortunate enough to be a native West Virginian, is clear: Embrace your Mountain State roots. I truly believe every industry or career field has some sort of avenue for you to showcase your natural storytelling abilities. Lean into that, and you will go far.
